Gillian Anderson confirms she's leaving 'The X-Files'

As The X-Files season 11 was getting ready to make its big debut, one bit of information overshadowed the excitement of the occasion. Naturally, fans were shocked and wanted to know why.

It's hard to imagine "The X-Files" without Anderson, who plays Dana Scully, the skeptical half of an Federal Bureau of Investigation duo who investigates odd occurrences. We are someone who loves the series the most when it is doing experimental, odd storylines featuring new characters and are not necessarily connecting to larger arcs or mythologies. Anderson's exit follows the departure of showrunners Bryan Fuller and Michael Green, who left the show six weeks ago due to creative differences with Fremantle Media regarding the second season. There is something that is just incredibly appealing about being able to dive into a strange-but-wonderful tale that gets resolved in a single hour.

Gillian Anderson wants to make it crystal clear that this revival run as Dana Scully will be her last as America's favorite skeptic dragged through hell.

"There's lots of things I want to do in my life and my career", she said. But "I don't want to be tied down to doing one thing for months and months".

That answer certainly makes sense when seeing how she has continued to take on new roles over the years.

The announcement comes just days after Anderson received her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

She added, "I wouldn't necessarily have been happy if those six were how we said goodbye". It just is, ' she said.

Anderson delivered the news to reporters at the Television Critics Association winter press tour. "I'm finished." Apparently Scully's sendoff has already been filmed, so depending on how that was handled, there may be no turning back at this point. Anderson said that she originally meant to sign on for the six-episode revival in 2017.
