Texans looking to extend contract of coach Bill O'Brien

The Texans are expected to hire Gaine as their GM, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com reports. He interviewed for the same position with the Rams (2012), Jets (2013), Dolphins (2014), Eagles (2015), Bears (2015), Bills (2017) and 49ers (2017) prior to landing the gig with the Texans.

If O'Brien goes to Mobile, Ala., with an extension, it'll be easier for him to hire quality assistant coaches compared to him coaching as a lame duck in the previous year of his contract.

Gaine's hiring comes shortly after Rick Smith, the team's GM since 2006, took a leave of absence last week due to his wife's battle with cancer.

The Houston Texans have a new man in charge - and it is one with significant New Jersey ties.

Before going to Buffalo, Gaine was with the Texans for three seasons serving as director of pro personnel and director of player personnel under Smith.

Gaine is finally getting his shot at running an National Football League franchise after his eighth interview for an opening.

Gaine's extensive experience includes working in scouting and personnel since 1999. At 2 a.m., he accepted an offer to become the Packers' new general manager to replace Ted Thompson and cancelled his interview with the Texans that was scheduled for Sunday. Gaine worked on four drafts and free-agent periods for the Texans before he left for Buffalo in May of a year ago.

This past season, the Texans were well out of the playoffs with a 4-12 record.

Texans executive Jimmy Raye III also interviewed for the job. The Cowboys blocked the Texans from interviewing exec Will McClay.
