Turkey rejects United States court ruling on Turkish banker

Turkey dismisses banker's US conviction over Iran sanctions-dodging

About the call of US envoy to the UN Nikki Haley on Wednesday for a UN Security Council meeting on the protests, Cavusoglu said the USA brought this to the worldwide arena because "they are strongly opposed to the Iranian administration".

"Atilla's attorney, Victor Rocco, said they intend to appeal adding, "[Atilla] is sad but intent on clearing his name".

Referring to Western media reports and remarks made by certain USA and Israeli officials with respect to the protests, the Turkish president said his country was familiar with the West's media propaganda campaign and "hackneyed, meddlesome" comments by the U.S. president and Israeli prime minister. "This successful prosecution is another example of our resolve to pursue and bring to justice those who violate our sanctions and other laws that protect our national security".

Atilla is a deputy general manager at Turkey's state-run Halkbank.

The jury needed about 24 hours of deliberations over four days to find the 47-year-old Atilla guilty after a trial that opened November 28 before U.S. District Judge Richard M. Berman.

Turkey on Thursday slammed as meddling in its affairs a NY court ruling that convicted a Turkish banker in connection with a massive scheme to help Iran evade United States sanctions. "But you can't do both", acting Manhattan U.S. Attorney Joon Kim said.

"If this is the USA understanding of justice then the world is doomed. The outcome of Atilla's choice is now a felony conviction in an American court of law". We are against foreign interventions in Iran. The transactions passed through USA financial institutions, violating sanctions against Iran. Since protests broke out across Iran last week, US President Donald Trump has voiced his support for the demonstrators, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has praised them for taking to the streets to protest against the government, Xinhua news agency reported.

Although US prosecutors have criminally charged nine people, only Zarrab and Atilla have been arrested by US authorities so far.

Turkey's desire for improved relations with Europe also comes at a time when its ties with the United States have soured over a slew of issues, including Jerusalem, Washington's continued support for Kurdish fighters in Syria and the trial of a Turkish banker accused of helping Iran evade U.S. sanctions. Later on Wednesday, Atilla was convicted on charges that he took part in a complex scheme where Iran traded its oil and gas for gold, with some of the proceeds moved through US financial institutions without their knowledge.

"They say Iran is not using the iron fist of the state".

The bank has denied any wrongdoing and said its transactions were in line with local and worldwide regulations.

Mehmet Hakan Atilla, 47, is a resident and citizen of Turkey.

The jury returned a verdict of guilty on five out of six counts. He was cleared of another money laundering charge.

Atilla's sentencing is scheduled for April 11, while Zarrab's date is not yet planned.

Turkey's Halkbank said on Thursday its executive Mehmet Hakan Atilla has the right to appeal against a USA court verdict finding him guilty of helping Iran evade US sanctions and said it always adheres to national and worldwide regulations.
