Brutally cold conditions that have gripped the East Coast of the U.S. will last most of the weekend, prompting wind chill warnings from Virginia to Vermont.

In Burlington, Vermont, people battled temperatures of minus 18C and a wind chill of minus 34C.

In New York City, according to the National Weather Bureau, temperatures should reach 4C (40F) next week.

Outside Boston in the northeastern state of MA, a state Water Resources Authority worker collapsed into a snow bank while shoveling snow and died on Friday.

Record-breaking low temperatures continue in the United States where the snow covered the East Coast and Midwest creating risky conditions as tens of millions of people struggled to clean up from a blizzard that dumped deep, drifting snow in many areas.

It's the perceived temperature that people and animals feel when exposed to the elements.

"As wind increases in speed, it increases the rate of heat loss on your body, making you feel colder than it actually is", CNN meteorologist Derek Van Dam said.

Saturday's cold snap has been called unsafe because it will make it easier for people to experience hypothermia and frostbite.

The National Weather Service issued a wind chill warning for Niagara County through 7 a.m. Sunday, cautioning residents to expect "dangerously cold wind chills" ranging from 15 below zero to 25 below zero.

At least 22 people in the United States have died in brutal cold weather following a massive winter storm causing the weather to become even more unbearable across the Northeast and Midwest of the country.

Six deaths were reported in Wisconsin, four in Texas, three in North Carolina, and one each in Michigan, Missouri and North Dakota. The victim was taken to a hospital and later died from the injuries. A 75-year old man died after sustaining life-threatening injuries from a snowplow he was using. A Meals on Wheels driver found his body lying in front of his wheelchair on the porch of the man's home. Temperatures in Boston and other parts of New England are not expected to climb out of the single digits, Fahrenheit, this weekend.

On Thursday afternoon, the tide gauge at Boston Harbor matched its record at 15.1 feet - previously set during the blizzard of 1978. Waves from the sea washed into Boston streets. Firefighters and the National Guard had scrambled to rescue dozens of coastal residents stranded by freezing water pushing from the Atlantic.
