Google: We fixed Spectre and Meltdown with no performance loss

He added, "If this requires a revised firmware update from Intel, we will distribute that update through the normal channels".

Intel said Thursday its patches for vulnerable processors are causing some computers using its older chips to reboot more often. The updates will reach end users through system providers and OS vendors.

Intel said the older the user's processor is, the bigger the performance hit.

"We have received reports from a few customers of higher system reboots after applying firmware updates", Intel states.

"Specifically, these systems are running Intel Broadwell and Haswell CPUs for both client and data centre".

All eyes were on Krzanich at CES 2018 as he gave the show's opening keynote, just days after experts in Google found the flaw in the chips made by Intel.

"Thanks to extensive performance tuning work, these protections caused no perceptible impact in our cloud and required no customer downtime in part due to Google Cloud Platform's Live Migration technology", the post said.

According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, Intel is quietly advising system manufacturers to hold off on any patches that they issue to customers while Intel looks at the issue of bugs in the code that was developed to fix the problem.

The moonshot came from Google engineer Paul Turner, and it's known as "Retpoline". The full details of the patch were disclosed on the tech giant's official website, but they seem to remain determined to assure their fans that at least for their GPUs, Nvidia has managed to make their device invulnerable and immune to things like Meltdown and Spectre.

The cause of the issue is now unknown, but Intel has revealed it's working around the clock to assemble and distribute a patch - though there's no telling how long it will take to arrive.

Intel has been hit by both Spectre and Meltdown and shares in all three chipmakers have been pushed around by the issues.

This kind of slowdown is assumed to be an unavoidable downside to patching Spectre and Meltdown, but today we're learning that it may not have to be that way.

Compounding future issues is that it's also likely these two major processor flaws are not the only ones security researchers will discover.
