LG Display Unveils 88-inch 8K OLED Display

Rollable OLED display with fingeprint sensor patented by Samsung

Evidence that the display industry is slowly moving to viable 8K displays, comes in the form of an 8K OLED panel which LG will unveil at CES next week. With twice the resolution along with 9-inches of display more in the offing, that the price of the new 8K OLED TV will be significantly on the north of the above price ball park is quite natural.

LG Display says that this massive screen is part of its commitment to lead the high-end premium TV market, and notes that this product reaches the 8K resolution without having to compromise in brightness. Plus, if LG's new set ever does reach store shelves, it will likely cost as much as a new Miata; LG now sells a 77-inch OLED TV that's only 4K for a whopping $20,000.

LG's new 8K OLED TV will be shown at this year's Consumer Electronics Show (CES), which kicks off January 9 in Las Vegas.

Technology websiteEngadget reported that the TV is the largest and highest-resolution OLED screen to date. LG's 77-inch TV costs a whopping $20,000.

As rumors circulate about Apple's intentions for the 2018 crop of iPhones, LG has reportedly been picked to manufacture 6.5-inch OLED displays for the company. Not because LG pays us to say so or because we just have a bias towards their products (we're also nearly invariably critical of the company's rather crappy budget 4K UHD TVs), but because OLED really is some of the best 4K TV display technology we've ever seen for faithfully rendering consumer entertainment in 4K HDR.

ChannelNews is also tipping that Samsung, Philips and several Chinese brands along with Japanese brand Sharp will reveal 8K TV's at CES. Back in 2016, the Korean company showcased a fully functional rollable OLED panel. The screen's resolution is an enormous 7680 x 4320, which means there are 33 million pixels - four times that of Ultra HD (4K), which is itself four times the resolution of regular old HD. The idea of a folding phone is nothing new but we have yet to see a device that has a fully functional display that can flex and work like any ordinary smartphone screen. If you are watching TV in a brighter environment you might find QLED TVs offer more "pop" than an OLED alternative.
