Myanmar army's admission of killings a positive step, says Suu Kyi

Rohingya refugee children

Myanmar's military said earlier this week its soldiers had killed 10 captured Muslim "terrorists" during insurgent attacks at the beginning of September, after Buddhist villagers had forced the captured men into a grave the villagers had dug.

Many refugees start at transit centres set up along the Bangladesh-Myanmar border before they are brought to the main refugee camps in Cox's Bazar.

As per Anadolu news agency, the request comes after the military admitted to the killing of 10 Rohingyas in the war-ravaged Rakhine state.

"We hereby declare that these ten innocent Rohingya civilians found in the said mass grave in Inn Din Village Tract were neither ARSA nor had any association with ARSA", the group said in a statement on Twitter.

"We have made a decision to provide the aid in response to the agreement between Myanmar and Bangladesh to represent an global message of support so that the repatriation can be carried out promptly", said Foreign Ministry official Shinobu Yamaguchi in a statement.

The acknowledgment is an indication that the country is ready to own responsibility for any breaches in rule of law, said Suu Kyi, after meeting Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kano, Efe news reported quoting the state media.

Asked if the revelations about the killing at the village of Inn Din, about 50 km (30 miles) north of the state capital Sittwe, could be a concern for refugees who are being asked to return, Suu Kyi said: "Some people might be afraid, but this is not something that has happened right now". "It is a new step for our country", she told a joint news conference with Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono in Myanmar's capital of Naypyitaw. The army appointed a senior officer to investigate.

Rohingyas who fled from the persecution of Myanmar security forces want to see a positive development including citizenship, security, and scope for enjoying their basic rights before they return to their country from Bangladesh, the UNHCR said recently.

More than 655,000 Rohingyas have crossed into Bangladesh since August 25 previous year, escaping a military crackdown in the Rakhine state, which many countries and human rights bodies have described as ethnic cleansing.

The UN and United States have accused Myanmar's army of ethnic cleansing, with the UN rights chief saying it may even be guilty of genocide.
