Police arrest three suspects in Kasur rape case

Girl's rape and murder sparks protests in Pakistan

A Pakistani TV anchor went on air with her daughter to protest the brutal rape and murder of a seven-year-old girl in the country.

The girl was on her way to a Quran recital when a man approached her, grabbed her by the hand and led her away. The report found injuries on her body and face, and a bone in her neck fractured. Reports say that a video has emerged of her walking hand-in-hand with a stranger and police are verifying the footage.

The girl in Kasur district of Punjab province was abducted last week outside her home.

The IGP appeared and submitted initial report in the murder case, while admitting the negligence of police department in arresting the culprit. The citizens of Pakistan complain that the Authorities are doing nothing to investigate similar cases, with child victims.

Zainab's parents returned from their pilgrimage on Wednesday but they were unable to attend their child's funeral prayers. "For the last two years, we are living in fear, parents are scared to send their kids outside", Zainab's father, Muhammad Amin Ansari, told reporters this week.

Zainab's father claimed that police "did not cooperate" with them: "It is our friends who have stood by us", he regretted.

Police earlier told Dawn that DNA samples from the victim's body have been dispatched for forensic testing.

A division bench of the Lahore High Court on Friday ordered the Punjab inspector general of police (IGP) to arrest without fail the killer of innocent girl Zainab within 36 hours.

This is the 12th such case in the same 2-kilometer area, the regional police office confirmed. He said Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif was personally monitoring the case. Scores of other people also gathered at Steel Bagh Mor near the hospital and protested with the girl's body in the middle of the road.

The chief justice also summoned the complete details of similar cases related to children in Punjab.

Senate Chairman Raza Rabbani suggested introducing appropriate legislation and stricter legal implementation in order to prevent such incidents in the future. The abuse was uncovered in 2015 and a number of suspects arrested.

Laws for the protection of children must be made in line with global laws, he said.
