Radcliffe breaks silence on Depp casting controversy

Daniel Radcliffe Johnny Depp

In a report in Entertainment Weekly, Daniel Radcliffe rather nicely summed up the dilemma of everyone associated with the franchise who are being asked about Depp casting. On one hand, he wants to support the producers who gae him "a great start in life and an fantastic job", but on the other hand, he totally understands the frustration fans are feeling.

"I can see why people are frustrated with the response that they were given from that", Radcliffe said.

Radcliffe made a comparison between National Football League players being suspended for smoking weed whilst others were accused of far worse and tolerated, and actor Jamie Waylett - who played Slytherin member Vincent Crabbe - being dropped from the two final Harry Potter films for possession of marijuana plants.

Meanwhile, following on from the end of the first film, the sequel sees the Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald escape from the Magical Congress of the United States of America (MACUSA). Radcliffe pointed out during his time on Harry Potter, someone was held accountable for a less serious crime and wondered why Depp's accusations weren't taken with the same intensity. In the statement, she wrote, "When Johnny Depp was cast as Grindelwald, I thought he'd be wonderful in the role". And J.K. Rowling didn't exactly help the situation when she defended the decision. One voice that had remained silent, though, was the star of the original "Harry Potter" films, Daniel Radcliffe, until now.

He made a comparison to Jamie Waylett, who played Crabbe in six "Harry Potter" films and was sacked before the two "Deathly Hallows" movies ended the series.

It's nearly as if Johnny Depp is allowed to get away with things that other actors can't, simply because he's really famous.

'Harry Potter fans had legitimate questions and concerns about our choice to continue with Johnny Depp in the role. The whole controversy is about the relationship between Depp and his ex-wife Amber Heard who will appear in Aquaman alongside Jason Momoa later this year. There was never any intent of physical or emotional harm.

He'll obviously have a major role in the second film, since it's called "Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald".
