SA call up Olivier, Ngidi for 2nd Test

Dale Steyn won't be able to bowl for the rest of the first test against India and is probably out for the entire three-match series with a "freakish" foot injury sustained while bowling in his comeback game on Saturday, the South African team manager said.

Olivier has played five Tests - all of them in 2017 - and Ngidi made his worldwide debut in a T20I against Sri Lanka a year ago but is yet to play the other two formats at the global stage.

Initial scans showed tissue damage around the bottom of Steyn's foot and near the heel, Moosajee said, and Steyn wouldn't be able to bowl again in the Test in Cape Town. By the end of the day's play, South Africa had scored 65 runs in 20 overs for two wickets in their second innings. He also struggled with a knee injury this season, which kept him out of some domestic games.

Ngidi‚ just 21‚ has played only nine first-class matches but has already claimed three five-wicket hauls among his 31 scalps.

Since then he has featured in domestic matches for Titans that featured his best T20 figures of 4 for 14 against Warriors in the Ram Slam T20 Challenge.

He will be sidelined for up to six weeks‚ and could get a crack at taking the three wickets he needs to overhaul Shaun Pollock as South Africa's champion test bowler when the series against Australia starts at Kingsmead on March 1.
