Trump Referred to Intelligence Analyst as 'Pretty Korean Lady'

White House pushes back over Trump N. Korea quote

Months before President Donald Trump referred to African nations as "shithole countries", he broke his decorum by reportedly asking why a "pretty Korean lady" who briefed him on policy wasn't negotiating with North Korea on behalf of his administration. "Despite her response of "Manhattan", the president apparently kept digging and inquired about the origins of "[her] people" until she told mentioned that her parents were from Korea.

Trump then asked an adviser in the room why the "pretty Korean lady" wasn't negotiating with North Korea, suggesting that her ethnicity should guide her career path.

The president's comments, at once racist and sexist, are just one example to emerge in NBC's report alleging a series of inappropriate, racially-tinged encounters. Trump asked, according to multiple people briefed on the meeting, before going on to question why the US wasn't admitting more immigrants from countries like Norway instead.

NBC said it did not interview the analyst, whose identity and agency it did not reveal, citing concern for her privacy.

The exchange was detailed to NBC News after Trump's "shithole" remark on Thursday drew backlash and claims that he is racist.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment, NBC News said. The senior Democratic senator Dick Durbin, who was in the meeting, subsequently said that he had.

"Where are you from?" the president asked, according to two officials with direct knowledge of the exchange.

The NBC report listed other instances of the president speaking with an apparent lack of sensitivity in formal surroundings, in meetings with members of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) and with Navajo code talkers.
