Trump's Lawyer Sues BuzzFeed, Fusion GPS Over Russia Dossier

On Tuesday, Trump's personal attorney Michael Cohen filed a lawsuit against Buzzfeed and Fusion GPS, the firm behind the dossier, for defamation.

The Fusion GPS lawsuit, which was filed at a federal court level, seeks $100 million in damages.

In the lawsuit filed last Tuesday in the NY state court, Cohen states that even though Buzzfeed claimed that the dossier had unverified information, they failed to clarify the reports with him.

"Even though defendant BuzzFeed expressly acknowledged the unverified (and potentially unverifiable) nature of the dossier's allegations, defendant BuzzFeed published the un-redacted dossier and the article anyway - without attempting to determine the veracity of these reports with plaintiff himself", the complaint states.

The dossier contains unverified claims that Cohen and Trump had suspicious connections with Russian figures.

Buzzfeed has publicly affirmed its decision to publish the material, claiming it to be clearly within the public interest and looks forward to defend its decision to do so on First Amendment freedom of press grounds. Fusion GPS is the political intelligence firm which compiled the infamous Trump dossier.

Smith did not reveal how BuzzFeed got a hold of the dossier - which has recently become the source of congressional scrutiny, but he did provide an idea as to what they knew about the dossier at the time and why they published it.

Smith said criticism of Buzzfeed's decision to publish the dossier has "faded" and that he has not had a "single person approach" him and say, "I wish I hadn't read the dossier, and wish I had less insight into the forces at play in America".

After that release Tuesday, a Trump lawyer filed lawsuits against BuzzFeed and Fusion GPS for damaging and inflammatory statements. Comey then briefed former President Barack Obama and President-elect Donald Trump on the dossier, further giving it weight, in the eyes of news outlets. "Just filed a defamation action against @BuzzFeedNews for publishing the lie filled document on @POTUS @realDonaldTrump and me!"

Simpson told investigators he first spoke with Steele about conducting opposition research into Trump in May or June of 2016. Simpson told congressional leaders that the FBI found the dossier credible because an undisclosed "human source" associated with Trump had offered the bureau corroborating information.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) released transcripts from a Senate hearing with Fusion GPS co-founder Glenn Simpson on Tuesday. Its interest to the public is obvious.

Cohen stated in his lawsuit that the dossier made false claims about his family ties to Russian Federation, also denying that he flew over there to meet with certain government officials. In May 2017, Cohen provided a copy of his passport to BuzzFeed that showed it had been stamped for entry and exit to the United Kingdom and Italy.

However, Buzzfeed remains strong in battling with Cohen in court in regards to the Russian dossier. Cohen testified to the House Intelligence Committee behind closed doors on October 24 and publicly to the Senate Intelligence Committee on October 25. They characterized it as an attempt to discredit a crucial source in the investigations by Congress and the special counsel, Robert Mueller, and distract from the central question: whether the Trump campaign knowingly sought aid from Russian Federation. "Nobody here talks about her", the White House counselor told CNN's Chris Cuomo on "Cuomo Prime Time".
