African Union demands apology from Trump over 'shithole' remarks

US President Donald Trump sparked global furore after reportedly using the phrase "shithole countries" to describe Haiti and African countries this week.

An alleged description of African and other countries as "shitholes" by Donald Trump prompted outrage on Friday, even as the USA president appeared to deny having used the specific term.

He later tweeted that he has "never said anything derogatory about Haitians other than Haiti is, obviously a very poor and troubled country".

Members of Central Florida's Haitian community on Friday criticized reports that President Donald Trump used a vulgar remark to describe the country on the eve of the anniversary of the 2010 quake, one of the deadliest disasters in modern history.

"The language used by me at the DACA meeting was tough, but this was not the language used", he wrote.

According to reports, Trump pushed for Haitians to be excluded from any immigration deal, asking, "Why do we want people from Haiti here?".

Trump's latest comments have sparked global outrage and have been widely condemned as racist and extremely offensive.

"The president of the United States is racist", CNN's Don Lemon said on Thursday night.

Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Illinois, confirmed the remarks, saying Trump "said these hate-filled things and he said them repeatedly".

The president's Twitter posts on Friday morning referred to the meeting with lawmakers a day earlier about the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA, the Obama-era effort that provided temporary work permits and reprieves from deportation to immigrants brought to the United States as children by their parents. "Then the influencer said you also need to call the telephone company, tie up the lines and call the telephone company talking about 'I need to have my global phone plan include S-hole'". "There is a serious need for dialogue between the United States administration and the African countries". The African Union, a group representing the continent's 55 countries, issued a blistering statement saying the Trump had dishonored USA values.

Immigration is one of the issues that Pope Francis, who has strongly defended the rights of developing countries, and Trump have clashed over.

Developing countries do have difficulties, but they are not "shithole countries", Duarte said, while calling Trump's remarks as "unfortunate". "Probably should record future meetings - unfortunately, no trust!" Wall was not properly funded, Chain & Lottery were made worse and US would be forced to take large numbers of people from high crime. "For years, I and others have been trying to tell you, the American people, that this man has been exhibiting bigoted behavior".
