African Union, Others Respond To Alleged 'Shithole Countries' Comment

The African group of ambassadors to the United Nations has demanded an apology from Donald Trump, after the U.S. president reportedly aimed a racist remark at some Caribbean nations and Africa.

Durbin told reporters on Friday that throughout the president's remarks, Trump said "things which were hate-filled, vile and racist". The African Union, a group representing the continent's 55 countries, issued a blistering statement saying the Trump had dishonored USA values.

Haiti's ambassador in Washington has also asked for an apology, as Trump reportedly specifically questioned the protections granted to Haitian immigrants after the quake.

In its continuing coverage of the US immigration debate, the Vatican newspaper noted media reports that President Donald Trump "used particularly harsh and offensive words about immigrants" from several countries.

"We sent guidance to our folks and told them that we must reiterate that we have great respect for the people of Africa and all nations, and our commitment remains strong", he said.

Africans were "partners with America on behalf of the future we want for all of our children".

The comment "truly flies in the face of accepted behavior and practice", said Ebba Kalondo, spokeswoman for AU chief Moussa Faki. The Associated Press, however, reported that Trump privately defended the alleged comment, arguing it wasn't racist but "straightforward". The president was discussing immigration reforms and reportedly expressed disdain about having to take some populations.

Rupert Colville, a spokesman with the United Nations human rights office, earlier slammed Trump's "vulgar language". "You can not dismiss entire countries and continents as ´shitholes´ whose entire populations, who are not white, are therefore not welcome", Colville said. "So, it's not just President Trump who doesn't understand that", added Young.

During a Thursday meeting on immigration with a bipartisan group of lawmakers, Trump criticized protections the United States has given to immigrants from various underdeveloped countries. He wrote: "Never said anything derogatory about Haitians other than Haiti is, obviously, a very poor and troubled country".

"Donald Trump is vying for the most racist person that I've met these days", he added.

Democrat Sen. Dick Durbin said U.S. President Donald Trump repeatedly called African nations "shitholes" during a meeting with congressional leaders on Thursday.

Akufo-Addo's predecessor, John Dramani Mahama, also criticized Trump's comments in a tweet Saturday. In a statement, Shah said the President will only accept an immigration deal that adequately addresses the visa lottery system and chain migration - two programs that hurt American economy and allow terrorists into the country.
