Big 12 Week 3 Preview: Texas Tech and Kansas

Big 12 schools continue beating up on one another

Since these two teams last met, TCU overhauled its lineup, starting three different players against Texas than they did against West Virginia.

Francis netted 10 of his total season-high 17 points, while Keenan Evans drained a jumper with 38 seconds, as the No. 8 Red Raiders upset No. 2 West Virginia 72-71 on Saturday in front of a sold-out crown inside United Supermarkets Arena.

Texas Tech is having arguably its best season in program history.

Both teams are 15-2 overall and 4-1 in the conference, but it's the Red Raiders that came away with a result that could boost them further up the new rankings on Monday.

Carter sank a 3-pointer with 0.8 seconds remaining to draw the Mountaineers within a point, but the Red Raiders inbounded the ball and ran out the clock. Texas Tech has a lot of depth with ten players who average double-digit minutes. "Starting Senior Forward Zach Smith (6'8" 220-lbs) did not play against the Sooners due to an injury and is still day to day.

"Junior Center Norense Odiase (6'9" 245-lbs) leads the team in rebounds (5.5) and averages 4.7 points per game. Defensively, Texas Tech yields 60.2 points per game against the opposing teams. Smith leads in rebounds with 4.4 while Evans tops in assists with 1.4 per game. Esa Ahmad, playing his first game of the season after becoming academically eligible, chipped in 18 points in a reserve role. Kansas also starts Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk at the four and he can really make the three-point shots. (13.8), West (12.9), James Bolden 10.4 and Teddy Allen (9.1) per game. Their defense takes a slight step back, but not enough to think they can't win this game.

West Virginia controlled most of the first half behind its pressing defense and 3-point shooting. King played over 30 minutes in each of the last two games, and on Wednesday pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds. Jevon Carter is leading the team with 16.1 points, 5.5 rebounds, 6.8 assists and 3.6 steals per game.
