DACA Recipients Can Apply For Renewal, Government Says

This week, bipartisan congressional leaders on DACA that provided $1.6 billion for border security, reformed family-based legislation and codified protections for "dreamers", or DACA recipients, but Trump called the deal a "big step backwards". "DACA gave them a more tolerable set of choices, including joining the mainstream workforce".

That's even though a federal judge ordered the Trump administration to restart the program that it canceled past year. However, federal officials are not accepting requests from individuals who have never before been granted deferred action under DACA. As of the end of March, more than 200,000 people had been initially approved for the program, meaning they could legally work and were protected from deportation.

But that agreement was cast into doubt the same day when a firestorm erupted after reports surfaced that President Trump, during a meeting with lawmakers over an immigration bill, asked why the US was accepting immigrants from "shithole countries" referring reportedly to immigrants from Haiti and Africa.

The Department of Justice has indicated it will appeal the judge's decision, a move that could again put the program on hold. Trump has insisted that any bill addressing the program must also include funding for border security and construction of his long-promised wall between the US and Mexico.

That number will soar to over 1,000 a day after March 5, when the program was set to begin being phased out, with all permits expiring by the end of September 30, 2019.

The Trump administration announced in September that it would eliminate DACA, which protects people who were illegally brought to the United States as children - so-called Dreamers - from being deported.

The federal agency posted a statement to its website announcing the resumption of applications for DACA renewals.
