Donald Trump keeps Iran nuclear deal alive by waiving economic sanctions

Iran nuclear sanctions waived again but human rights sanctions imposed

In particular, Iran said the placing of judiciary chief Ayatollah Sadegh Larijani on the sanctions list "crossed all red lines of conduct in the global community. and the government of the United States will bear responsibility for all the consequences of this hostile move".

Bhala, the Brenneisen Distinguished Professor at the University of Kansas School of Law, said the announcement is important in that "it preserves the July 2015 Nuclear Deal, for now, which the other countries in the deal also support".

Ryabkov's remarks come one day after US President Donald Trump extended sanctions relief on Iran for what he said would be the final time, calling on European allies to work with Washington to fix "significant flaws" in the nuclear deal.

While approving the waiver on USA sanctions related to the nuclear deal, Washington announced other sanctions against 14 Iranian entities and people, including judiciary head Ayatollah Sadeq Larijani, a close ally of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Trump says the deal has flaws. "It is delivering on its main goal, which means keeping the Iranian nuclear programme in check and under close surveillance", the bloc's foreign policy chief, Federica Mogherini, said. "European partners were unanimous today in our determination to preserve the deal and tackle Iran's disruptive behaviour", added Mr Johnson. I said I would not certify the nuclear deal-and I did not.

Donald Trump keeps Iran nuclear deal alive by waiving economic sanctions

Despite his objections this is the third time President Trump has renewed the deal and UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said on Friday "nobody has so far produced a better alternative".

The US Congress requires the president to approve sanctions waivers related to the deal - signed by Iran, the US, the UK, Russia, France, Germany, China and the European Union - every 120 days.

"The U.S. government, like other parties to the deal, is obliged to fulfill all its obligations, and if it fails to comply with its obligations under false pretexts, it should be fully held accountable for the consequences", the foreign ministry said in its statement. United States officials and others familiar with the administration's deliberations told AP Trump was likely to back the accord for now but that he may pair his decision with new, targeted sanctions on Iranian businesses and people. Trump is hoping to fix the sunset clause in the deal, which removes restrictions on Iran's nuclear programs by the end of 10 years, as well as make clear that Iran's nuclear and missile programs are "inseparable" and in need of restrictions.

Iran says its nuclear program is only for peaceful purposes.

The old, central bank sanctions largely cut Iran out of the worldwide financial system, and are considered to be the most powerful of the penalties imposed by the USA during the Obama era, along with global penalties for buying Iranian oil. "We are also targeting Iran's ballistic missile program and destabilizing activities, which it continues to prioritize over the economic well-being of the Iranian people".
