The airport for the Australian city of Newcastle has canceled flights for the second time in 24 hours because of bushfires in the area, operator Newcastle Airport said on its Facebook page on Sunday.

Residents are urged to monitor the situation, prepare their bushfire survival plan and take advice from firefighters on the ground.

Firefighters are at work to control a bushfire near Newcastle which has burnt 1,381 hectares of land and which was moving east along Cabbage Tree Road towards Newcastle Airport yesterday afternoon, Sydney Morning Herald reported.

More than 100 firefighters and water bombing aircraft are working to contain the fire.

The strong gusts has led to the Bureau of Meteorology issuing a severe weather warning for damaging winds.

The strong southerly winds have pushed the fire north of Newcastle Airport with the winds expected to continue into the evening, the RFS says. The fire has reached Barrie Close and continues to move along Cabbage Tree Road, the NSW Rural Fire Service said.

The fire has forced the closure of Newcastle Airport.
