Fort Wayne schools do well in 2017 high school graduation rates

Photo Provided West Virginia Superintendent of Schools Steven Paine spoke Friday during an event in Charleston honoring almost 70 West Virginia high schools for having graduation rates of 90 percent or above.

While Hoosier graduation rates have remained stagnant over the past six years, state education policy has been in upheaval.

Although politicians at the time did not promise that these changes would guarantee widespread higher academic performance, it was part of their arguments in advancing the new policies.

EACS was down similarly in 2017, with a graduation rate of 91.36 percent at its high schools and non-waiver rate of 81.11 percent. That drop coincided with a 17-percent increase in the overall number of ELL students in Indiana's public schools.

Lewis Cass High School had the highest graduation rate among the four Cass County school corporations at 93.9 percent. Beech Grove Schools, which enrolls just over 3,000 students, made the biggest jump of any district in the county, increasing 8 percentage points to 95 percent.

While graduation rates fell across the board statewide, the decline was particularly pronounced among English language learners (ELL), who saw a 15-percent decrease in graduation rates. The improvement significantly narrowed the gap between the district and the state average.

According to a press release, recent data show more students in West Virginia are graduating from high school when compared to previous years. Typically, he said, more students means a higher overall rate.

The graduation rate reflects the percentage of all students who graduate, including those qualifying for waivers to graduate despite not completing all requirements.

"It's obviously an accomplishment for our school and community" PikeView High School Principal Mark Godfrey said.

Almost seventy West Virginia high schools were recognized for achieving graduation rates of 90 percent or greater during the 2016-2017 school year. Black students and kids with special needs had graduation rates below 80 percent. That's three points lower than the 2016 rate of 96.9 percent.
