Fourth Fappening Hacker Caught by the Federal Bureau of Investigation

Actress Jennifer Lawrence attends The Hollywood Reporter 2017 Women In Entertainment Breakfast

A 26-year-old man has been charged in USA federal court for playing a role in the so-called "Fappening" phishing scheme that terrorised celebrities with nude photo leaks.

Most of the accounts Garofano obtained access to belonged to members of the entertainment industry in Los Angeles, but also to many local CT victims. He faces a maximum of five years behind bars and a supervised release.

According to a plea agreement, Garofano admitted that between April 2013 and October 2014, he sent emails to victims that appeared to be from Apple security accounts.

The hacker admitted to sending emails to victims while posing as official Apple security, encouraging recipients to send him their private login credentials.

The DoJ confirmed the charge against Garofano stems from the investigation into "the leaks of photographs of numerous female celebrities" in September 2014 known as "Celebgate".

In some instances, Garofano traded the usernames and passwords, as well as the materials he stole from the victims, with others.

Although many of Garofano's victims were A-listers, including Gabrielle Union, Kaley Cuoco and soccer star Hope Solo, many non-celebrities who live in CT were also targeted, according to officials. The first was Ryan Collins, 36, of Lancaster, Pennsylvania (sentenced to 18 months in federal prison); the second is Edward Majerczyk, 29, of Chicago, Illinois (sentenced to nine months in federal prison); and the third is Emilio Herrera, 32, of Chicago, Illinois (pleaded guilty and awaiting sentencing next month).

This is the fourth case stemming from the Celebgate incident. Edward Majerczyk, 28, pleaded guilty in 2016 and was sentenced to a nine month prison term past year. The 26-year-old Garofano will likely be sentenced to up to 16 months in the federal case, according to the Hartford Courant. The suspects in the latter two cases were sentenced to prison.

Photos that the suspect obtained later ended up online as part of a mega leak of nude images and videos from Hollywood celebrities.

The star of Mother! called the leak a "sex crime" and a "sexual violation" in an interview with Vanity Fair magazine.

"George is a good person who was taken advantage of by several hackers more sophisticated than himself", Lynch said in an email.
