Heyman | Mets talking to Adrian Gonzalez

The Dodgers Adrian Gonzalez hits a solo home

The Mets are adding some insurance at first base.

Adrian Gonzalez has agreed to a deal with the New York Mets pending a physical, according to ESPN and other multiple reports. Last month, the 35-year-old veteran was traded from the Los Angeles Dodgers to Atlanta as part of a multi-player deal, and the Braves promptly released him. When he returned from his injury, NL Rookie of the Year Cody Bellinger had taken over at first base. Gonzalez is still due nearly $17 million guaranteed in his previous contract from Atlanta and $4.5 million from Los Angeles, leaving him available to sign for the league minimum.

Gonzalez, who will be 36 next season, would be a cheap stopgap who would not prevent Smith, one of the Mets' top prospects, from taking over at first base in the team's eyes.

Gonzalez will be a free agent after the upcoming season.

Known for his durability over the course of his 14-year major league career, Gonzalez was limited to just 71 games last season as a member of the Dodgers.

The result was the deal that sent Gonzalez, right-hander Brandon McCarthy, infielder Charlie Culberson, left-hander Scott Kazmir and cash to the Braves in exchange for outfielder Matt Kemp. Smith hit.198/.262/.395 with nine homers and 26 RBIs in 49 games.

Gonzalez hit just.242 with three home runs, 30 RBI, and a career-low.642 OPS.

Gonzalez likely won't be the opening day starter in NY, as the Mets recently signed Lucas Duda to a three-year, $39 million deal.
