Iran refuses renegotiation of nuclear deal despite USA pressures

US President Donald Trump was meeting with his top security advisors on Iran sanctions reliefSAUL LOEB

Iran said Saturday it won't accept any changes to its 2015 nuclear deal with world powers after President Donald Trump vowed to pull out of the accord in a few months if European allies did not fix its "terrible flaws".

On Friday, Trump agreed to waive sanctions against Iran that were lifted as part of the worldwide deal but said it would be the last time unless conditions were met to fix what he called "significant flaws" in the deal.

Iran's foreign minister, Mohammed Javad Zarif, tweeted Friday that the United States "must bring itself into full compliance - just like Iran", in reference to the 2015 nuclear deal among Iran and world powers, including Russian Federation. These areas fall outside the scope of the nuclear deal.

Supporters expressed skepticism that the deal will survive in its current form.

In particular, Trump's desired accord would not begin to expire after 10 years as parts of the existing deal do.

Starting Friday, Trump faces a series of deadlines related to the Iran nuclear deal and sanctions that were waived as a result of it.

On Saturday, the spokesman for the Iranian parliament's presiding board, Behrouz Nemati, said that the JCPOA is an global agreement that neither the United States nor any other powers can violate unilaterally, according to Tasnim news agency.

"The Trump administration's policy announced today sets impossible standards that would ultimately isolate the United States rather than isolating the regime in Tehran", he said. "Instead, I have outlined two possible paths forward: either fix the deal's disastrous flaws, or the United States will withdraw". To keep the USA in the nuclear agreement in the future, senior administration officials said Trump will pressure European partners to agree to impose new conditions on Iranian behavior.

Netanyahu also told Macron the world should "strongly condemn" what he called "five crimes of the Iranian regime".

But Trump argues that his predecessor Barack Obama gave away too much to Iran in sanctions relief, without forcing the Islamic republic to end its ballistic missile program and support for militant groups.

Those points would have to be blessed by Congress and woven into a supplemental deal forged with the US' European allies.

Iran's Foreign Ministry said in a statement carried by state media, "The Trump regime's hostile action (against Larijani) crossed all red lines of conduct in the global community and is a violation of worldwide law and will surely be answered by a serious reaction of the Islamic Republic". The Europeans, meanwhile, have said they are willing to discuss the matter with the USA but have shown little enthusiasm with Trump's hard line.

Mr Trump also wants Iran's ballistic missile programme to be addressed."This is a last chance", the United States president said in a statement on Friday.

The British and German foreign ministries said they had taken note of the decision and would confer with France before deciding on a course of action. Trump said, however, that it would be the last time he signs the waiver unless the deal is modified.

One of the individuals is Ayatollah Sadeq Amoli Larijani, the head of Iran's judicial system.

The U.S. decision in imposing new sanctions on the Iranian individuals and entities proves the U.S. government's animosity towards the great Iranian nation. The sanctions are an apparent American response to the recent wave of protests across Iran.
