Logan Paul controversy: How long can YouTube, Facebook and others shirk responsibility?

Logan Paul speaks at the Teen Choice Awards at the Galen Center in Los Angeles. You Tube has suspended the star who posted video images of what appeared to be a suicide victim but said Saturday Jan. 13 2018 that

Even as the Logan Paul controversy continues, other YouTubers are uploading videos highlighting live, illegal activities (trespassing and breaking and entering) on the service without any outcome whatsoever.

It has yet to be determined if Japanese police will move forward with pressing charges against the disgraced YouTuber.

However, Paul took it upon himself to step away from publishing videos for some time.

Paul later apologized and said he should never have posted the video. A petition on Change.org demanded that Paul's YouTube channel be deleted. The film, a sequel to Paul's popular YouTube Red sci-fi thriller The Thinning, was announced in late November and was expected to drop on Red, YouTube's ad-free subscription streaming service, later this year.

YouTube's response to most of these controversies was either demonetising the videos or removing the ads - but certainly not taking any of these videos down. Paul is one of the platform's biggest stars, with Forbes magazine estimating he earned US$12.5 million previous year. Even in the case of Logan Paul, the video was taken down by him voluntarily. "They were built to make money".

Google Preferred features YouTube's most popular content in packages for sale to advertisers.

"We have always said Google, Facebook and others are media companies and have the same responsibilities as any other media company".

The 22-year-old's YouTube channel has more than 15 million followers and was reportedly worth more than 12 million dollars in advertising revenue last year.

With millions of videos being uploaded to their platform, which are they then use to generate profit, content platforms such as YouTube, Facebook and Twitter should be held responsible for the same content they monetise.
