'This guy is a bigot,' Atlanta immigrants say of Trump's reported comments

There has been widespread condemnation of comments attributed to US President Donald Trump describing Haiti and some African nations as "sh**holes".

Earlier, the 55-nation African Union (AU) condemned the remarks, while Botswana and Senegal hauled in the USA ambassador to complain.

The reports prompted outrage and accusations of racism from people in the usa and the rest of the world.

"I condemn this unforgivable statement and this demeaning of the office of the Presidency", Baltimore Rep. Elijah E. Cummings said in a tweet.

"We will not accept such insults, even from a leader of a friendly country, no matter how powerful".

President Donald Trump blamed Democrats for stalled immigration negotiations amid backlash over vulgar comments he allegedly made in the Oval Office while meeting with lawmakers this week.

In a series of tweets yesterday, Mr Trump also suggested that momentum towards a deal on maintaining such protection had stalled.

Trump went on to say "I'm running to be president of all Americans..." He did not specifically deny using the word "shithole".

President Donald Trump listens during a meeting in the Oval Office of the White House in Washington. Casting a cloud over already tenuous negotiations President Donald Trump said Sunday Jan. 14 that Deferred A

"You can not dismiss entire countries and continents as "sh**tholes", whose entire populations who are not white, are therefore not welcome". But instead of winningTrump's support, as they had expected, the president launched into a broadside against immigration from Haiti and Africa.

In 2015, there were 676,000 Haitian immigrants in the United States, up from 587,000 in 2010, accounting for less than 2 percent of the USA foreign-born population, according to the Washington-based Migration Policy Institute.

When asked how his uncle would have responded to Trump's comments on Thursday, Farris Jr. said that he would have urged Trump "not to refer to African countries like that".

Republican Senator Tom Cotton and Republican Representative Bob Goodlatte were both there, as was White House aide Stephen Miller, a proponent of severely limiting immigration.

In stark contrast to his administration's decision to end protected status for Haiti, Trump said "the truth is Haiti is still suffering very badly, maybe as badly". Those affected have until 2019 to leave the US or, if eligible, seek alternative immigration status. Nicaraguans were given until January 2019.

Western Sahara is not recognised as a sovereign state by the United Nations and thus not included in its African Group.

In November, the Trump administration announced it was ending the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) that has allowed 59,000 Haitians to legally work in the United States since 2010 when an quake killed an estimated 300,000 people, leaving millions homeless.

The NAACP also condemned Trump's remarks and said using profanity to describe the countries "is not only a low mark for this president, it is a low point for our nation".
