Trump backtracks again after first denying making 'shithole' comments

039;S--hole' projected onto Trump hotel

After Trump was asked at Thursday's White House meeting if the USA would accept more immigrants from Haiti and Africa, the president reportedly questioned why people from "s***hole countries" are coming to America.

But Trump and his advisers notably did not dispute the most controversial of his remarks: using "shithole" to describe African nations and saying he would prefer immigrants from countries like Norway instead.

Despite Trump's denial, one of the sponsors of the DACA deal who was present at the meeting, Senator Dick Durbin (D-Illinois), insisted the USA president indeed referred to the countries in question as "s***holes" multiple times during the gathering. "What was really tough was the outlandish proposal made - a big setback for DACA!"

Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., who was at the meeting and confirmed Trump's comments publicly, said Trump's words "were vile, hateful, and clearly racial in their content".

"Today's a day for the White House to try to focus on substance, while the press will focus entirely on process", Fleischer said.

In a statement, the White House did not deny Trump's "shithole" comments.

"To no surprise, the president started tweeting this morning, denying that he used those words", Durbin said.

Larrieux, one of the more than 20,000 Haitian TPS recipients in South Florida who now faces deportation, said she had given candidate Trump the benefit of the doubt.

Trump this week voiced frustration behind closed doors about people coming to the United States from what he said were "sh**hole countries", according to sources.

Normil was one of hundreds of people who attended a protest on Friday in Little Haiti, which is the heart of the Haitian-American diaspora in a state filled with more than 300,000 Haitians.

Trump's comments were allegedly made on Thursday at a White House meeting with lawmakers on immigration reform. "There is just so much dissension in this country right now", one church member said. "There is a serious need for dialogue between the USA administration and African countries".

"The president is showing his ignorance on the importance of Haiti in helping the U.S.in its younger days", Lafortune said. He said he hates to even be asked about it, and often says, "I am the least racist person you will ever meet".

Also taking issue with Trump's reported remarks was state Sen.

Meanwhile, spokesmen for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif. - who was at the Oval Office session - declined to provide comment.

On Friday (local time) the President tweeted that his language was "tough" but insisted he did not say anything derogatory about Haiti aside from noting it's a poor country.

All 54 African ambassadors to the United Nations issued an extraordinary statement saying they were concerned about the "continuing and growing trend from the USA administration towards Africa and people of African descent to denigrate the continent and people of color".

Friday, like many of my fellow Haitians and Haitian Americans, I planned to mourn the dead. "Do we need more Hatians?"'

On a week during which Miami's Little Haiti neighborhood remembered thousands of Haitian quake victims, racially tinged remarks attributed to America's President brought some to tears. "Probably should record future meetings - unfortunately, no trust!"
