Uhuru watches as Zuma is booed

President Jacob Zuma has once again been booed by his own party members at the ANC's 106 birthday celebrations in East London, where thousands of people have gathered to listen to its newly elected president Cyril Ramaphosa.

Speaking after their meeting in Durban, SA both heads of state said they discussed trade and connectivity and how these would boost industrialisation and also create jobs for millions of young people. But Zuma and Kenyatta arrived at around 10.30am.

"Political parties are the key engine in ensuring people-to-people connection", said President Kenyatta.

President Uhuru Kenyatta has left South Africa where he has been since Thursday.

"[Today's visit] has laid the groundwork for my state visit, which should be sometime in the first quarter of this year, where we hope to conclude some very strong agreements of mutual benefit", Kenyatta said.

Kenyatta is expected to attend the ANC's annual 8 January statement in East London on Saturday.

"I am happy to participate in the ANC birthday celebrations. It's a message that resonates well not only with South Africans but [also] to the rest of us in our political parties in the rest of Africa‚" he said.

President Uhuru Kenyatta is on a highly-publicised trip down South, a trip that started on a slightly bad footing after a major security lapse.

The two leaders also spoke of the challenges being faced on the continent, particularly in South Sudan and how its civil war was being managed by the Intergovernmental Authority on Development, a regional bloc that negotiated a ceasefire between the young country's warring factions in December.

Zuma's second presidential term doesn't officially end until 2019 when national elections will be held, but he could be removed early through a motion of no confidence in parliament or at a meeting of the ANC's national executive committee.
