US could 'conceivably' return to Paris climate accord

"The Paris Agreement as drawn and as we signed was very unfair to the United States". Although legally the USA cannot leave the treaty until 2020, Trump had said in June a year ago that the U.S. could stay in if the treaty was renegotiated.

Moreover, the agreement hurt United States businesses overall and gave advantages to other countries such as China, Trump added.

Trump spoke glowingly of Norway's renewable energy.

He also said during the presidential election campaign that he wanted to help United States oil and coal industries. It was not clear from his comments on Wednesday whether he has embarked on any attempt to renegotiate America's terms.

"It took away a lot of our asset values", he explained. Norway, rich in Arctic oil and gas reserves, was the first developed nation to ratify the global agreement to reduce carbon emissions.

"There was a tremendous penalty for using it".

According to some estimates, the U.S. would have had to close businesses in order to qualify by 2025.

He noted that other nations - China, for instance - would have until 2030 to abide by the Paris conditions. "We have strict regulations to meet our Paris targets, which means we have very strong policies for environment-friendly and climate-friendly technologies", she said.

"The EPA and commissioners are very powerful in the sense that they want to have clean water, clean air - but we also want businesses that can compete".

Solberg said Norway was "really appreciative of the good work that we have together with the United States".

"The Paris accord would have taken away our competitive edge". The US president has at times seemed torn between advisors like his daughter Ivanka, who advocate for policies that mitigate the effects of climate change, and aides who believe global accords hold America back.
