What Happens During Blackout at World's Biggest Tech Show

Techies and nerds attending this year's CES (Consumer Electronics Show) convention were not expecting to be in the dark early this morning when they tried to check out companies new technological offerings to the world.BUT that's exactly what happened when most of the Las Vegas Convention Center lost power for power.

"A preliminary assessment indicates that condensation from heavy rainfall caused a flashover on one of the facility's transformers", a public statement from the Las Vegas Convention Center read.

Thousands were evacuated from the CES tech show in Las Vegas. Power in the South Hall was restored within minutes, and power has now been fully restored to all areas.

Sudden record-breaking downpours on Day One of CES was the first rain for Las Vegas in 116 days, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.

Public service announcements played over an intercom thanking attendees for their patience while the work to resolve the issue continued. The hashtag #CESBlackout was born. The cause of the power outage was not immediately known. In a hilarious twist, the event lost power for nearly two hours, leading to some areas getting closed. Both large and smaller ones rely on the annual trade show to ink deals that will translate to cash months in the future; the blackout disrupted some of the product demos, panels and meetings key to those deals. Any tech being shown off at the show that requires an outlet isn't operational.

The Consumer Technology Association (CTA), the organisers behind CES, blamed the glitch on the heavy rains the day before.

TV maker LG's OLED Canyon display demo, with 246 OLED panels and more than 30 high-definition generators, took almost an hour to get back in full operation. "If our extension cord went over there we'd be out of power".

Introducing Blackout™: The biggest thing to hit #CES2018 since #5G.

CES attendees posted images on social media of the blackout, with one sharing a video of a woman playing a violin to entertain guests at the Intel booth.
