African ambassadors to United Nations blast Trump remark as 'racist

Airbnb has dedicated at least US$100,000 in digital ad placements to promote listings in places such as Haiti, El Salvador and African countries.

"The African Union Mission condemns the comments in the strongest term and demands a retraction of the comment as well as an apology not only to Africans, but to all people of African descent around the globe", it said. The governments of Namibia and Botswana have also condemned the comments.

On Thursday, Trump was meeting lawmakers to discuss a proposal for an immigration plan when he reportedly grew agitated as the conversation turned to citizens of Haiti and El Salvador, and immigrants from the African continent. As for Africa, he asked why more people from "s--hole countries" should be allowed into the US, the sources told the Associated Press.

"At Airbnb, we believe in an open society and the power of connecting people from different communities and cultures", the company stated.

President Trump has since rejected the claims against him in a series of tweets but White House communicators have however failed to categorically deny that he made those comments.

"You can not dismiss entire countries and continents as "s***holes" whose entire populations, who are not white, are therefore not welcome", he added. In this case, it includes a not-very-veiled criticism of Trump and his comments.

"Given the historical reality of how African Americans arrived in the United States as slaves, and the United States being the biggest example of how a nation has been built by migration - for a statement like that to come is particularly upsetting", said Ebba Kalondo, spokeswoman for AU chief Moussa Faki.

The Ambassadors unanimously agreed to the resolution after an emergency session to weigh Trump's remarks.

Haiti, which on Friday marked the eighth anniversary of the disastrous quake which claimed around 220,000 lives, also summoned the United States representative for an explanation. Earlier this week, Trump allegedly questioned in an immigration meeting why the US would want to admit more people from Haiti. He's said he has "a wonderful relationship with Haitians". "When we embrace the world, we see its beauty".

The alleged remarks were said to have also been made in reference to Haiti and El Salvador. "We'll start with refugees, disaster survivors, and relief workers, though we want to accommodate many more types of displaced people over time", the company's founders via email.
