Colombia: 10 workers die after bridge they were constructing in Chirajara collapses

At least nine workers were killed when the bridge suddenly gave way

A Colombian bridge collapse killed 10 workers building the span outside the nation's capital, officials said.

The bridge in Chirajara was to be part of a highway connecting the capital, Bogotá, with the city of Villavicencio.

"Ten people are confirmed to have died", Col. Jorge Diaz of the Civil Defense rescue organization told reporters.

The deceased fell from a height of approximately 280 meters (918 feet) when a section of the structure of the bridge gave way.

Nine people were killed at the scene and the 10th died after being taken to a nearby hospital with severe injuries. Eight injured workmen have been transferred to hospital.

Construction on the bridge, which was on the Bogota-Villavicencio highway, began in November 2016, local media reported.

The collapse occured in the mountainous region of Chirajara in central Colombia.

Authorities said they are investigating the cause of the collapse and trying to find out how many people were on the structure.

The site is located 65 kilometers from Bogota where works are being carried out on the highway on the route to Villavicencio.
