The NSW transport union declare a 24-hour strike for January 29

RTBU NSW Secretary Alex Claassens

"Trains will go to bed on Sunday night and won't come out on Monday morning", Mr Claassens told reporters in Sydney on Tuesday.

After last weeks debacle Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Andrew Constance has requested that Sydney Trains to report to him within a fortnight on how the network can better recover from major incidents with cumulative impacts like we've seen over the last few weeks.

In addition to the 24-hour strike, rail workers will wear campaign clothing and badges from Friday before implementing an indefinite ban on overtime that would begin on January 25, the day before the Australia Day long weekend.

The RTBU said it wanted to give commuters as much notice as possible of the action so they are able to make alternative arrangements.

At the height of the delays, eight out of 10 train lines were not running to a timetable anymore, with no expected departure times available, and travellers were also turned away from certain platforms at Central and Wynyard due to significant overcrowding.

"The bad way management and the NSW government are willing to treat its hard-working employees has been laid bare for everyone to see lately", said Claassens.

New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian has described Sydney's train network as "a work in progress" on her first day back in the office for 2018. The Rail, Tram and Bus Union announced the strike this afternoon after negotiations with rail management fell through.

In short, as the RTBU put it, "there's never an ideal time to take this kind of action, but the reality is, we have to". The Transport Minister and management haven't left us with any other choice.

'The last thing any railway worker wants to do is inconvenience commuters. but i'm sure everyone will understand, we've been forced to this point'.

Rail workers are unhappy about the current enterprise agreement and have voted to take industrial action as they continue to fight for a six per cent pay rise and improved working conditions including rostering and claiming days off.

The 24-hour stoppage follows the announcement of two other forms of action announced this week - the displaying of union and industrial materials and a ban on overtime.
