Trump Looks To Slash Millions In Aid For Palestinian Refugees Despite Warnings

Palestinian leaders voted on Monday to call for the suspension of recognition of Israel as they met in response to US President Donald Trump's declaration of Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

On Sunday night, Abbas attacked the U.S. ambassadors to Israel and the United Nations, David Friedman and Nikki Haley, calling them a "disgrace".

Top of the agenda on Monday was reviewing the Oslo agreements that the PLO signed with Israel in the 1990s, Fatah central committee member Azzam Al Ahmad said, according to the Palestinian Wafa news agency.

After recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital, Trump said that the fresh negotiations would be easy since he removed the most hard part and the sticking point that is the claim over Jerusalem, off the table.

The official added that the PLO criticized the decision of US President Donald Trump to relocate the US embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and considered the US move as unacceptable.

This, in turn, implies that Jerusalem can, ideally, one day be the shared capital of both Israel and a future Palestinian state (as the UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said last week).

On Sunday, he said the Palestinians were calling for an internationally led process in which the United States was not the mediator.

Arguing that Israel has been undermining the agreement, Abbas signaled the Palestinians might quit the Accords, while declaring its effectively null and void during his fiery speech. "He said, 'I will give you a peace deal.' The deal turned out to be a mess".

Lieberman said Abbas's Palestinian Authority is behind the violent protests against the United States plans to move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and, he added, "the Palestinians enjoy the security coordination [with Israel] more than we do".

In order to truly understand the crisis within the Palestinian leadership, one must remember that in the eyes of the Palestinian people, Abbas's strategy of negotiations and reaching a political settlement has recently collapsed and there are now no alternative solutions. "Politically, Jerusalem is our capital".

The Central Council convened in PA headquarters in Ramallah for two days starting on Sunday night.

"The European Union must condemn Abu Mazen's statement that Israel is a colonial project of the Europeans", said Hotovely.

President Trump promised in May that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict would be solved during his presidency. Kushner oversees Trump's peace efforts in the region. The US State Department has neither confirmed or denied the move, saying "there are still deliberations taking place".

In other words, it is hard to escape the conclusion that Trump's administration is indeed open to Jerusalem as an "undivided" capital.

The amount of US aid to the Palestinians was about $650 million in 2016, including funding of the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), Palestinian administration and security forces and US Agency for International Development (USAID) projects.
