WhatsApp working on anti-spam features

The developers of Whatsapp are working on another feature that should help most users as they will soon be able to get rid of spam messages and focus on what matters to them the most. However based on what we can see, these notifications are within the app itself, as opposed to external notifications that you would typically receive when you get a message. The feature will come in the next update version 2.17.430.

Users of the Facebook-owned app can report spam messages when they receive them, but for many less tech-savvy members of the community, the offending messages may not be obvious.

The feature is now in beta-stage testing on Android and is still under development for iOS according to reports. Once a message goes viral, it ends up being shared on multiple groups and most users have to scroll through the same set of messages again and again. The forwarded message will come with a label "Forwarded Many Times".

A warning message from the company will appear prominently at the top of the chat bubble.

The platform has frequently used by spammers spreading false information and now the messaging giant is confronting the issue. The only way that it will stay free is if you are a frequent user i.e. you have at least 10 people you are chatting with. Presently, WhatsApp allows users to send messages 25 times.

It advises users to be wary of messages that include misspellings or grammatical mistakes, ask you to tap on a link, ask you to share your personal information, ask you to forward the message, ask you to click on a link to "activate" a new feature, and claim that you have to pay to use WhatsApp.

While the feature might not cut out spam altogether, it should make it easier to identify spam messages and ignore them.

The new "dismiss" feature could also let group admins take less drastic action by simply demoting other group admins to take control of the conversation. "These messages may content unwanted advertising and fake news, and they often invite you to forward the message to your contacts".
