Eddie Jones signs contract extension as England coach

BREAKING NEWS Eddie Jones signs new England contract

Eddies Jones has extended his stay as head coach of England beyond the 2019 Rugby World Cup, with the Australian signing a two-year extension to keep him at Twickenham until August 2021.

Jones' contract was due to end following the World Cup tournament in Japan next year, but 57-year-old has opted to extend his stay in England going into 2021.

Jones has won 22 of his 23 Tests since taking the role in November 2015, and says extending his deal was "not a hard decision".

Jones is likely to find the prospect appealing having achieved notable coaching success with England, Japan, South Africa and Australia.

Jones is looking forward to continuing his work building a legacy for England.

In November 2014, the RFU gave Lancaster a six-year contract extension, but 12 months later he was out of a job after the World Cup failure.

Jones is now preparing England for their Six Nations title defence this year.

"The first priority is still to win the World Cup and then to make sure the guy taking over has a good team and good structure".

"These are exciting times for English Rugby, with a focussed and committed squad who are full of potential and determined to win".

RFU chief executive Steve Brown has stated it was not only Jones' record with the senior men's team but also his wider impact on rugby in the country that was a contribution to the new deal.

Under Eddie's leadership, we have risen from eight to second in the world - and Eddie won't be satisfied until we are number one.

The RFU said this "robust succession planning process" was in place in an effort to avoid "the historically disruptive pattern of resetting the coaching team and performance system every four years".

'Eddie will be a big part of this process, and wants to ensure a smooth handover to his successor'.

Injury-hit England, bidding to win an unprecedented third successive outright Championship, begin their title defence away to Italy in Rome on February 4.
