Spurs' Leonard (quad) shut down indefinitely

As the Spurs continue to win games, it will be interesting to see if Leonard is able to return at some point this season from right quadriceps tendinopathy.

Leonard didn't play his first game this season until December 12 due to right quadriceps tendinopathy - a sore tendon in the quad.

In addition to his ailing right quad, the 27-year old forward also sustained a partial tear in his left shoulder a week ago, though the decision to shut him down indefinitely stems exclusively from quad injury.

Injuries have been an issue for Leonard since October, when the team announced Leonard would miss the entire preseason with a quadriceps injury.

"It hasn't responded the way we wanted it to", coach Gregg Popovich told the Express-News after the team's morning shootaround in Manhattan. He's frustrated as hell. He wants to play badly. He only played in nine games before injuring his shoulder and having to sit out due to that, but he was expected to return the court in the next few days.

Despite playing just 23.3 minutes per game, the 26-year-old Leonard is averaging 16.2 points per game.

"I'm probably more conservative than most, but the trainers, the rehab people, the doctors, the coaches, we all talked about this for a long time", Popovich said.

Only four Spurs are averaging double-digit scoring this season: LaMarcus Aldridge at 22.4 ppg, Leonard, Rudy Gay at 11.5 ppg, and Pau Gasol at 10.4 ppg.

The Spurs, 29-16 and 5-5 in their last 10 games, are now third in the Western Conference, a half game ahead of the Minnesota Timberwolves.
