Officials in Pakistan's Kurram tribal region say a commander of the Afghan Haqqani Network, a militant group that is fighting against Afghan government and US -led North Atlantic Treaty Organisation forces in Afghanistan, has been killed in a suspected USA drone strike. Two people inside the vehicle were killed as a result of the attack.

In October, three suspected strikes in two days killed 31 people who officials said belonged to the Afghan Taliban and the Haqqani Network, allied to the Taliban.

According to sources, the drone strike targetted a vehicle near the border.

In the same month, Jamaat-ul-Ahrar chief Umar Khalid Khorasani along with nine of his associates, was killed in a drone attack in Paktia province. Two militants, including Haqqani network commander Jamiuddin, were killed, they said.

An increase in drone strikes that hit inside Pakistani territory is one of the steps USA officials have said could be taken if Islamabad does not end safe havens for militants.

The director of the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) earlier had warned that the United States will take necessary steps if Pakistan fails to destroy terror safe havens in its soil.
