Teenager shot and killed during altercation inside courthouse

A 16-year-old boy was fatally shot Wednesday in an OH courtroom after a deputy and some spectators were involved in a scuffle, a sheriff's department official said.

The Franklin County Sheriff's Office says Joseph Haynes was hit once in the abdomen during the Wednesday afternoon hearing in a domestic relations courtroom in Columbus.

"At some point as the hearing was concluding, there was an altercation that ensued involving the deputy and some of the family members", Minerd said. During the dispute, officials say the deputy got knocked to the ground and one shot was sacked. Chief Rick Minerd of the investigative sub-division spoke at a recent press conference. "And what we have learned was the deputy was knocked to the ground as part of that altercation where he came under attack".

Haynes grandmother, Geraldine, told FOX28 Columbus the deputy and the teen's mother got into an argument.

Geraldine Haynes also said that her grandson had his hands up at the time of the shooting. Joey went over there and grabbed a hold of his shoulder, and the cop let loose of (her) and slung Joey onto the ground ...

He died less than an hour later at a nearby hospital, the sheriff's office said.

The deputy also was taken to the hospital to be treated for injuries, reports say. He wouldn't speculate on what exactly happened.

Haynes' lawyer Jennifer Brisco told The Columbus Dispatch that during the hearing, the deputy threatened to arrest Haynes after the teen became highly emotional.

The sheriff's office immediately requested crime scene assistance from the state Bureau of Criminal Investigation and two employees of the agency were assigned.
