US Marshals capture escaped prisoner in Georgia

Connecticut Department of Correction shows Jerry Mercado. Authorities are searching for an inmate who escaped from a correctional facility in Enfield Conn. Carl Robinson Correctional Institution officials say Mercado

Police in Georgia released more details about how they captured an escaped inmate from Enfield.

A full scale search and investigation by multiple public safety agencies/departments resulted in Mercado's capture earlier today by the Canton Georgia Police Department.

Mercado, who is from Hartford, was serving a three-year sentence for third-degree burglary charges at the time of the escape.

Connecticut State Police informed the agency Mercado made a phone call earlier Wednesday morning from the Chevron gas station located at 370 Marietta Road, Cordry said.

Canton officers said they immediately responded to the area. Deputy Brian O'Neill, supervisor of the task force in CT, said they had done so in effort to bring national attention to the case, as the task force believed Mercado had been traveling in and out of NY.

That afternoon, the store Clerk at the Chevron dialed 911 to report that Mercado was back at the gas station. "A patrol corporal observed the wanted man in the store as other units converged to the location".

Mercado was taken into custody without incident.

It comes after marshals had raised the reward for anyone with information leading to the arrest of Mercado, who busted out of the Carl Robinson Correctional Institution in Enfield on January 7.

Authorities believe Mercado may have stowed away in the undercarriage of a garbage truck or state vehicle to escape.
