President Trump says national security could be shattered by shutdown

Pennsylvania state Rep. Rick Saccone’s weak fundraising numbers have raised some GOP concerns in the 18th District

Trump took to Twitter to express his concerns over the looming deadline and again stressed its importance for the US military.

In order to have the legislation successfully passed in the Senate, Republicans must wrangle more than a dozen votes from lawmakers who have not yet signed on.

The measure now moves to the Senate, where the math still appears to be a challenge for Republicans, who would need Democratic votes to clear the 60-vote threshold needed to pass it.

Some in the House Freedom Caucus oppose kicking the can down the road, so to speak, with yet another short-term spending bill.

A bipartisan group of senators hoped their proposal to give the almost 800,000 young immigrants a path to citizenship, boost border security measures, eliminate the visa lottery and make other changes to the immigration system would gain traction this week.

"We can pass a noncontroversial, bipartisan bill to keep the government open, or Democrats can create a manufactured crisis and shut down the government on the entirely unrelated issue - the entirely unrelated issue of immigration", McConnell said.

"Democratic senators' fixation on illegal immigration has already blocked us from making progress on long-term spending talks", Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said.

These proposals are not the first or only bills introduced by Republicans. Sen. John Kennedy of Louisana and Democratic Sen.

At least one Republican, Sen. Graham said. "It's time Congress stop the cycle of dysfunction, grow up, and act consistent with the values of a great nation".

Congressional Democrats, and some Republicans, wanted to see a legislative fix to that program in this spending measure, and many have said they'll oppose it without one.

Ryan downplayed the tweet to reporters Thursday morning. "He fully supports passing this legislation", Ryan countered, noting that he spoke to the president after the tweet was posted.

Democrats would be to blame, Ryan said earlier Thursday, if the government winds up shutting down, blasting them for using the military as "bargaining chips". Trump and Republicans want it to include money for the president's promised wall along the Mexican border and other security measures.

If Democrats can make this looming shutdown about Trump and his ability to govern, they will be in a strong position to win the fight nationally and help the "Big Five" hold their own.

Republicans hope that now that the bill has passed the House, they'll be able to portray the Democrats opposing the bill as obstructionists threatening to shut down the government and pressure enough of them to vote for it to squeeze through passage. Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn, R-Texas, said he was "not sure what the president means" when asked on Fox & Friends about the CHIP tweet. The last time the government shutdown was 2013, and it lasted 16 days.

Trump, meanwhile, backs the short-term funding plan.

It was during that meeting that Trump questioned why the USA would want more immigrants from "shithole countries" in Africa.

In remarks to reporters outside the Pentagon Thursday, Trump focused on the military again. "Military families, veterans and children benefiting from the SCHIP program don't need to be shoved aside". To them, it's not a game but a strategy of political outcome, coming early in a new presidency, and in a year that could see one if not both chambers changing hands. Six Democrats, a mix of Hispanic and moderate legislators, backed the bill.

House Republicans are expected to vote on the short-term deal Thursday night. Mike Rounds have indicated they'll vote against the stopgap measure.

On the Senate floor, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, D-New York, said Republicans and Democrats don't want a shutdown, blaming the situation on the president's shifting opinions and pitting Congress against the president.

Three centrist Democrats, Sen.

A GOP source close to the process complained that Trump did not spend much time working the phones to find the votes for the continuing resolution. Several Democrats, including Tim Kaine, Mark Warner and Patrick Leahy, have said they will vote against the resolution.

Republicans are now accusing Senate Democrats of taking the government hostage and harming government employees, who could face delays in paychecks, to obtain its demands.

Overall, the government lost more than $2 billion during the last shutdown, and $24 billion was shaved from national economic output.

This story has updated with additional developments and will continue to update throughout Thursday. "It's a way of saying well we can't decide so let's just drive by looking in the rearview mirror and do what we did yesterday".

Both votes, regardless of whether they pass in the House, would likely be considered nonstarters in the Senate. After being temporarily lifted for 2016 and 2017, it was stated for restoration this year.
