Senators who didn't recall Trump using vulgarity backtrack

Sen. David Perdue R-Ga. walks to the elevator for a meeting with President-elect Donald Trump at Trump Tower in New York. Casting a cloud over already tenuous negotiations President Donald Trump said Sunday Ja

Though Sen. David Purdue, a Georgia Republican, said on Friday that he could not recall Trump's characterization, he repeatedly dismissed questions about whether Trump used the description, saying Trump "did not use that word".

A Republican senator who attended a Thursday immigration meeting at the White House forcefully denied Sunday that President Donald Trump had used the phrase "s-thole countries" in describing Haiti and African nations, saying a Democratic senator's account of the session was "a gross misrepresentation".

"Following comments by the president, I said my piece directly to him yesterday". The views and opinions expressed within it are those of the author only and do not necessarily reflect the editorial opinion of IJR.

"I'm telling you he did not use that word, George", Perdue said. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) is standing by his assertion that Trump said "shithole", he said, adding: "Really, I'm allowed to say 'Dick Durbin?' That's surprising".

"In 2013, Sen. Durbin also made the same accusation against a Republican leader in a meeting with President Obama, and said that it was - he chewed out the president".

"This is a gross misrepresentation, it's not the first time Senator Durbin has done it, and it is not productive to solving the problem that we have at hand", Purdue told ABC on Sunday. It was so disrespectful to President Obama he could not have the meeting, that's what he said in 2013.

"President Trump brought everyone to the table this week and listened to both sides". Tom Cotton's lame statement regarding the deplorable comment by President Donald Trump about countries such as Haiti. But regrettably, it seems that not everyone is committed to negotiating in good faith.

"Multiple sources? There were six of us in the room", Perdue responded to Stephanopoulos. "Senator Durbin has it. Senator Perdue does not".

"I am stunned that this is their defense", Durbin said of the White House.

Durbin's communications director tweeted a response to Perdue's apparent questioning of the credibility of the IL senator's account of what Trump said.

A "White House official told me tonight there is debate internally on whether Trump said "shithole" or 'shithouse, '" Washington Post White House reporter Josh Dawsey said on Twitter.

Credibility is something that's built over time, Durbin spokesman Ben Marter tweeted.
