Washington State Attorney General's Office Appeals Decision to End Net Neutrality

Ethernet cables tangled over a digital device

"I'm opposing the repeal of net neutrality because of the destructive nature it will have on every Kentuckian from farmers to college students who use free and open internet to thrive and prosper", Beshear said in a written statement Tuesday.

On Monday, FCC Chairman Ajit Pai introduced a proposal to commissioners that would provide more than $500 million in funding for accelerating the rollout of broadband in rural regions.

The lawsuits are part of a multi-pronged approach against the net-neutrality repeal. Republican Senator Susan Collins has joined 49 Democrats in the endorsement of a legislative measure that would reverse the FCC's ruling.

Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson filed a petition Wednesday to appeal the Federal Communications Commission's decision to rescind net neutrality rules, according to a news release from the attorney general's office.

Among other things, critics contend the repeal ultimately will allow ISPs to set up two-tier data delivery systems, forcing content providers such as Netflix to pay more for the data to stream their movies - cost increases that could get passed on to consumers.

The internet is a global, public resource.

And that's the way it should be, argues state Sen.

Donovan added that the FCC's December vote was also illegal because it violated the commission's own process of public oversight. Thus ensues the debate on Net Neutrality.

Wiener's officer says his bill will "effectuate net neutrality in California utilizing the state's regulatory powers".

Acting Senate President Harriette Chandler said in a statement that the committee is meant to decipher exactly how MA is affected by "the federal government's wrongheaded net neutrality repeal". "It's great having the leadership backing the effort".

"Closing the digital divide is the FCC's top priority". Legal challenges need to work their way through the courts and, if successful, could block the FCC's vote.

Led by Sen. Cynthia Creem, the Special Committee on Net Neutrality and Consumer Protection plans to hold a hearing February 6 and has invited Attorney General Maura Healey to testify alongside other government officials, consumer advocacy groups and industry representatives.

New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, who is leading the suit, said Tuesday that the end of the net neutrality rules would hurt consumers and businesses.

Besides that, the net neutrality rules are technically still on the books. Other states interested in legal action include Oregon, Illinois, Iowa, and MA, among others.

So, what would happen if the internet is no longer free? Either event may serve as the kicking-off point for legal challenges, so several net neutrality advocates filed what are called "protective petitions" this week.

Connecting more spaces could have wide business implications, including new markets for advertising and ISPs, and more people able to use connected devices.
