'The Schumer Shutdown'? Trump-Schumer Meeting Yields No Deal Amid Looming Deadline

President Donald Trump didn't cut a deal with Minority Leader Chuck Schumer on spending and immigration after a 90-minute White House meeting Friday, telling the New York Democrat to hash things out with Republicans, according to Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn.

"Government Funding Bill (passed) last night in the House of Representatives".

Rank-and-file Republicans were willing to accept something less than the four-week bill the House already approved, but said Mr. Schumer's suggestion of four or five days was inadequate.

Most Senate Democrats oppose the short-term spending bill, called a continuing resolution, because it does not include protections for undocumented immigrants who were brought to the US illegally as children. Graham and Sen. Jeff Flake, a Republican from Arizona who also worked on the bipartisan bill, have said they will not support the House-passed CR. "As soon as we figure out what he is for, then I would be convinced that we were not just spinning our wheels going to this issue on the floor, but actually dealing with a bill that has a chance to become law and therefore solve the problem".

"Senator Schumer and the Democrats have been very stubborn on this immigration approach", Cotton said. "They're not talking to us". Dick Durbin, D-Ill., the No. 2 Senate Democrat.

"I think it's ratcheted up", he said.

But the measure does not include a fix for DACA, a program protecting young immigrants brought here illegally as children, that President Trump is phasing out in March. And it's because they put our men and women in the military and extension of the CHIP program in jeopardy for DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals), for something that's unrelated that does not have a deadline that's expiring this week.

If Congress fails to find a solution, the shutdown will begin at midnight on the first anniversary of the president's term. The House had planned to recess later on Friday for a weeklong break but members were warned they could be called back for votes.

South Dakota Sen. Mike Rounds had originally said he would vote "no", but announced Friday that he had reversed course after "receiving assurances that legislation to adequately fund our troops will be considered in both the House and Senate in a timely manner".
