Trump's approval rating plunges to historic low of 35%

Look back at President Trump's 2017 successes

Just 39 percent of Americans approve of the job President Donald Trump is doing in office, a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll released Friday shows, the latest in a string of surveys showing Trump with historically low poll numbers one year into his first term.

Asked about the president's accomplishments during his first year in office, 20 percent said the state of the economy and low unemployment was Trump's greatest success, followed by "putting America first", which was the choice of 13 percent of respondents.

Support from Democrats rose from 8% to 13%. "The president is a divider, not a uniter, say an overwhelming number of voters, an assessment made even more disturbing by his perceived lack of respect for people of color".

Trump, badly needing a major early legislative win, pushed for repeal of Barack Obama's Affordable Care Act, but the effort fizzled on multiple occasions in 2017 before the president and the Republican-controlled Congress moved on to a sweeping tax-cut bill.

By 59 percent to 38 percent, voters said Trump respects whites more than people of color.

37 percent said none of the potential responses made them feel positive about Trump.

In addition, 41% of respondents now expect to receive tax cuts from the law - up from 33% in December.

President trump also killed several job-stifling regulations: Signed an Executive Order demanding that two regulations be killed for every new one created.

Congress faces a March 5 deadline to pass legislation allowing them to remain in the USA, and congressional Democrats are demanding that action be taken or else they may oppose efforts to fund the goverment through September 30.

Some of those words - like the vulgar remarks Trump is reported to have said last week about countries such as Haiti and those in Africa, while suggesting the USA should bring in more immigrants from countries like Norway - would not have been reflected yet in the survey results.

The survey of 1,212 voters was conducted January 12-16 with a margin of error of 3.4 percentage points.
