At least nine killed as powerful storm 'Friederike' rages across Europe

A man passes a crashed tree uprooted by heavy winds in Amsterdam Netherlands Thursday

According to the Associated Press, two 62-year-old men were killed in separate incidents of falling trees or branches in the Netherlands on Thursday, and a third death was reported south of Brussels, Belgium.

Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport has suspended all flights and the Dutch national rail service halted all trains as a powerful storm lashes the Netherlands, toppling trees and blowing over tractor trailers, and causing traffic chaos.

At many stations, people stood in long lines in front of the information stands.

Travel is beginning to resume in Western Europe today after a deadly storm ripped through the region, halting air travel throughout much of the area and long-distance trains in Germany.

The winds are so strong that one man was blown metres across a square near the High Court of the Dutch town of S'Hertogenbosch. He said regional and local trains were still running in Berlin, Bavaria and the far north. One was killed by a falling tree in Zwolle and the other died in Amsterdam said it was expected to be busier than normal after it was forced to close temporarily on Thursday, resulting in the cancellation of at least 320 flights in and out of the key European hub.

In the Netherlands, which had borne the brunt of the severe winter storms earlier Thursday, two people were crushed by falling trees as bitter winds barrelled off the North Sea to hit the low-lying country with full force.

A second Dutchman, also 62, was killed in eastern Enschede when a tree toppled onto his auto, the Dutch news agency ANP said.

Apart from the six deaths, two men from Saxony-Anhalt also fell victim to the powerful storm, the latest update by the DPA shows.

Gale-force winds gusting at up to 70 miles per hour (110 kph) have been recorded in Britain, where thousands of homes in southeast England have been left without electricity.

The port of Ghent has been closed because of the high winds that are lashing Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany. "Friederike" was considered to be the strongest storm in Germany since "Kyrill" in 2007, which insurers said cost €2 billion, but 2015's "Niklas" caused slightly worse damage. Schiphol airport in Amsterdam halted flights for over an hour with KLM airlines cancelling over 200 flights before the storm even arrived.

The national weather service in Holland recorded 140km/h wind gusts in the Hook of Holland port as the storm went past.

German Railways said on its website that many trains would decrease their speed because of the storm and that delays are expected.

In a statement, the rail operator said only a limited number of trains were operating on global routes.
