"Detective Pikachu" Movie Adds Ken Watanabe to Cast

Justice Smith who will be seen in the upcoming 'Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom,' and 'Big Little Lies' actress Kathryn Newton are already cast

With Justice Smith confirmed as the human lead in the film alongside Reynolds and Three Billboards actress Kathryn Newton, Ken Watanabe - who has starred in such films as The Last Samurai, Godzilla and Inception - has now officially joined the cast of Detective Pikachu.

Watanabe takes on the role of Detective Yoshida, a character created specifically for the film. It's unclear if Reynolds will also lend his voice to the character, which could prove to be a bit controversial considering how fans reacted to the first time Pikachu spoke in a movie. Stay tuned to Heroic Hollywood for the latest news on the live-action Detective Pikachu film from Legendary and The Pokémon Company as we learn it.

Universal Pictures and Legendary Entertainment's Detective Pikachu is set to release on May 10, 2019. Thankfully for Western audiences, the Nintendo 3DS game on which the film is based will finally be coming to Europe and North America in March 2018.

Unlike normal Pokemon games, Detective Pikachu is more of a mystery game, in which players search for clues and talk to potential witnesses. This is where Detective Pikachu comes in to investigate what is happening. USA and European players will also get their first chance to play the Detective Pikachu game when Nintendo releases translated versions of both games in March 2018.

"Nicole Perlman and Alex Hirsch wrote the script with Eric Pearson and Tom McCarthy having completed production polishes."
Filming is set to begin later this year.
