Lambert off to a flier as Stoke win at last

Lambert off to winning start as Stoke upend Huddersfield

Stafylidis joins Stoke with his new side rooted in the relegation zone, 18th in the Premier League and a point adrift of safety.

A courageous new era at Stoke City got off to the best possible start as Paul Lambert's first game in charge delivered the precious victory that breathes fresh life into their troubled season.

The former Wolves and Aston Villa boss had only had this week to work with his players but he had visibly lifted them and on Saturday Stoke did not look like a team who had been beaten on eight of their last 11 Premier League outings.

Managing in the top-flight for the first time in nearly three years, Lambert had Joe Allen and Mame Biram Diouf to thank for at least momentarily lifting the Potters out of the bottom three.

Chants of "we are staying up" echoed around the bet365 Stadium on an uplifting day for Stoke as new manager Lambert made a dream comeback in the land of cash and controversy. "Them and the supporters". You can't hear yourself shout at times. "We won't win every game but if we can keep that level of intensity, we'll be fine", the Stoke manager said. "I thought we were outstanding in the second half".

The visitors struggled to find a way past the fit-again Ryan Shawcross, who won 14 headers at the heart of Stoke's defence.

"It's nice to get a clean sheet for the back lads but the most important thing was the team working harder than we have been".

Stoke have conceded 50 goals already this campaign, taking heavy beatings at Manchester City (7-2), Tottenham (5-1), as well as home and away against Chelsea (4-0 and 5-0 respectively).

Stafylidis has already been capped 21 times for Greece and previously spent the 2014-15 season on loan at Fulham in the Championship, making 38 league appearances. I'm exhausted. I'd forgotten what it was actually like.

"You wonder why you come back into it sometimes but that's the way I am".

Huddersfield never threatened either side of the quickfire strikes as their winless run stretched to six league games, leaving them one point ahead of the rejuvenated Potters.
