Tom Petty Autopsy Shows Singer Died From Accidental Drug Overdose

Tom Petty

Tom Petty died of an accidental drug overdose, Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner announced Friday.

The coroner's office attributed Petty's death at the age of 66 to a "mixed toxicity" of fentanyl, oxycodone, generic Restoril, generic Xanax, generic Celexa, acetyl fentanyl, and despropionyl fentanyl.

Petty had been suffering from a fractured hip that got worse during his recent tour, the statement said, along with emphysema and knee pain.

They said he performed 53 tour dates with the hip injury.

Petty, whose ringing guitar riffs, distinctive vocals and well-wrought everyman lyrics graced such hits as "Refugee", "Free Fallin'" and "American Girl", was found unconscious at his home in Malibu on October 2 and died at a hospital later that night.

The statement continues saying that because of these issues, Tom was prescribed various pain medications and that contributed to his fatal misuse.

"As a family we recognize this report may spark a further discussion on the opioid crisis and we feel that it is a healthy and necessary discussion and we hope in some way this report can save lives". "Many people who overdose begin with a legitimate injury or simply do not understand the potency and deadly nature of these medications".

He was taken to UCLA Santa Monica Hospital where he was put on a respirator, but was reportedly taken off life support the next day after doctors found he had no brain activity. He had been found in full cardiac arrest at his manager's home.

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.

Petty's hits over a long career included classics such as I Won't Back Down, Free Fallin' and American Girl.

He wrapped up a tour with the Heartbreakers on September 25.

Petty had previously suggested that the 40th anniversary tour could be his last, telling Rolling Stone in an interview: "We're all on the backside of our 60s". Pills such as the ones Petty was prescribed claimed the lives of tens of thousands of Americans a year ago.
