Driver Darren Osborne 'ran Muslims down after TV grooming drama'

Makram Ali 51 a victim of the terror attack in Finsbury Park who died as a result of multiple injuries

The prosecution said that the 48-year-old meant to kill as numerous crowd "as possible" when he allegedly drove the Luton box van into the crowd on 18 June. "In the event, he killed one person, a 51-year-old man called Makram Ali, and in addition injured many others, some of them seriously", Rees added.

"The prosecution say that the note and the comments he made after his detention establish that this act of extreme violence was, indeed, an act of terrorism, created to influence government and intimidate the Muslim community, and done for the objective of advancing a political, religious, ideological or racial cause".

While Osborne has not been charged with a terrorist offence, the prosecution consider that the note and comments he made after his detention "establish that this act of extreme violence was, indeed, an act of terrorism", said Rees.

The driver allowed the defendant to follow him and he arrived in the Finsbury Park area at just before 23:30, Mr Rees added.

Osborne allegedly meant to target the Al Quds Day march the following day which began in Portland Place just after 4pm, before deciding to attack the Seven Sisters site instead.

He added: "To seek to kill someone merely due to their religion is a bad thing".

Mr Rees told the court the alleged attack was "particularly horrific" because the group had gathered in the street to help Mr Ali, who had collapsed minutes earlier.

Speaking with "passion and anger", he is said to have told the serviceman: "I'm going to kill all the Muslims, Muslims are all terrorists". He accused them all of being rapists and belonging to paedophile gangs.

Jurors have heard that Osborne became a "brainwashed ticking timebomb" after watching the BBC drama Three Girls in May.

He started researching associated topics on the internet, including material featuring Tommy Robinson, the co-founder and former spokesperson of the English Defence League.

"Ferral [sic], inbred, raping Muslim men, hunting in packs, preying on our children".

Mr Rees continued: "Ms Andrews noticed that the defendant became obsessed with the subject matter of the drama".

The ex partner of Darren Osborne said he was a "ticking time-bomb" of rage, a court heard.

It is alleged that Osborne rented the van and drove to London when his hatred for Muslims intensified after two terror attacks on the streets of the British capital and Manchester.

Opening the trial, prosecutor Jonathan Rees QC said Mr Osborne had driven a Luton box van from Cardiff to London on 18 June.

Unemployed for the last decade, the defendant felt worthless and that he did not fit in, according to his partner.

Andrews said Osborne has an "unpredictable temperament", is a "loner and a functioning alcoholic" and suffers from depression, the prosecutor told the court.

The day before the attack Osborne announced in a Cardiff pub that he wanted to write to Theresa May, claiming that Labour had "gone to the dogs".

The prosecutor read the contents of the note to the court, saying: 'Why are there terrorists on our streets today?

A note recovered from the van Osborne allegedly drove said "Islam's ideology does not belong here", and taunted London Mayor Sadiq Khan, Jeremy Corbyn and the singer Lily Allen, jurors heard.

Immediately following the deadly incident, the court heard that a number of men who tried to prevent Osborne's escape - pinning him to the ground - reported he was "constantly smiling" and said "I want to kill more Muslims".

The court heard that Osborne falsely claimed to be in the army and, challenged by a soldier on which regiment he had served with, he said: "You will find out tomorrow".
