Bichon frise wins best in show at Westminster

A bichon frise named Flynn was crowned Best in Show at the 142nd Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show on Tuesday in New York City, wagging his tail to triumph over almost 3,000 dogs entered in the world-renowned contest for purebred canines.

The white powder puff's tour of the town is set to finish Wednesday night with a walk-on part in the Tony Award-winning musical "Kinky Boots".

"He likes getting groomed", said Flynn's handler, Bill McFadden from California. The dogs participating in the competition were divided into seven groups - hound, toy, nonsporting, herding, working, sporting and terrier.

Ty, a Giant Schnauzer, with handler Katie Bernardin, won the working breed category.

Flynn's competition included a regal Borzoi named "Lucy", a Border Collie named "Slick" and the nation's top ranked dog, a Giant Schnauzer named "Ty" who leaped onto his handler in glee when he was picked as runner up to Flynn.

Flynn is the first bichon frise to be named best in show since 2001 and the first non-sporting group champion since 2002, when Spice the miniature poodle took home the title. And congratulations to Lily Mancini- she showed an English Springer Spaniel. A grand audience at Madison Square Garden watched closely as these attractive dogs made their way around the ring.

McFadden said he believed this would be Flynn's final year at the competition. Just as a group judge started to evaluate him, he sat up on his hind legs in a paws-up pose.

Rumor, a German shepherd and 2017 Best in Show victor, poses for photographers during a trip to One World Trade Centre in NY a year ago.

Fame (US) - "Famous" - a border collie from Sparta (who usually just goes by "Fame") won the 2018 Westminster Masters Agility Championship on Saturday after spurting through an obstacle course in an unbelievable 29.53 seconds.
