An airport worker at Heathrow was killed this morning in a crash between two vehicles operating on the airfield.

Officials said one of the workers, a man in his 40s, died at a West London hospital.

British media reported passengers had been evacuated from planes after the accident. One suffered non-life-threatening injuries, the other died after being rushed to the hospital.

Police were called to the airport at 6am on Wednesday after the vehicles crashed on the taxiway.

Passengers on one plane had to disembark after the crash, a Heathrow spokeswoman said.

His next of kin have since been informed.

She added: "Our deepest condolences go to the family and friends affected by this accident".

The airport said that an investigation was underway following an incident on the airfield involving two members of staff, adding it was working with the police. Officers attended with London Ambulance Service colleagues. We await formal identification.

"We will be fully cooperating with the police in the investigation which will follow", Heathrow said in a statement. A post-mortem will be scheduled in due course.

"The Health and Safety executive has been informed.

This incident didn't involve any passengers and is not expected to cause any impact on journeys today".

At least 20 British Airways flights were delayed as a result of the incident.

The airline apologised to passengers and said it was doing "all we can" to ensure delayed flights depart as soon as possible.
